[Protocols](https://knowledgebase.scinote.net/en/knowledge/using-scinote?hsLang=en#protocols) # How to View Versions of a File in SciNote ## If you have the Validated or Platinum SciNote plan, you can view the version history of any files attached to a step, result, or inventory item. **Editing Files in SciNote** - **Microsoft files**: [Create and edit directly](https://knowledgebase.scinote.net/en/knowledge/how-to-create-upload-and-edit-microsoft-office-files?hsLang=en) within SciNote using Microsoft Online. - **Other file types include Microsoft files**: Open and edit them with their native software via SciNote Edit. For detailed guidance on using SciNote Edit, please refer to [this article](https://knowledgebase.scinote.net/en/knowledge/how-to-use-scinote-edit?hsLang=en). You can view a file's version history either directly from the file itself or through the audit trail. If you have the Essential or Academic SciNote Plan, users can still see previous versions of the file.  However, they can only access (download or restore) the latest version. ### To View the File's Version History From Accessing the File: 1. **Navigate to the file** you want to review 2. Click on the **three dots** on the file attachment 1. For **large** attachments and **list view**, the three dots are located to the right of the file information. 2. In **thumbnail view**, hover over the file to reveal the three dots in the bottom-right corner. Select **"Version history"** from the dropdown menu. Click on the **file name** or the **download icon** to view previous versions. 2. Click the **restore icon** to revert the file to a previous version. Go to the **Audit Trail** for your team. 1. If you’re unsure how to locate the Audit Trail, refer to [this article.](https://knowledgebase.scinote.net/en/knowledge/how-do-i-access-and-export-audit-trail?hsLang=en) 2. Find the record associated with the file. Look for entries where the **action** is **"record updated"** and click **"expand".**  1. Click on the **file name** to download the version you want to review. **Tip:** You can use the **Activities trail** to quickly filter for when a file was **edited** or **restored** to a previous version.
