Why isn't SciNote Edit working, and how do I fix it?

How do I fix the most common cause?

The most frequent cause is a browser permission that blocks SciNote Edit from opening apps on your device.

1. Open your browser's settings.
2. Go to Privacy and Security.
3. Find the permission that controls whether sites can open apps on your device.
4. If it is set to block, change it to allow.

What if that doesn't fix it?

If adjusting the browser permission doesn't fully solve the problem, reinstall the SciNote Edit client:

1. Delete the SciNote Edit application from your computer.
2. Download and install it again.

Do I need the desktop version of my program installed?

Yes. SciNote Edit opens files in the software installed directly on your computer — it does not work with online or web-based versions of programs. On every computer your team uses, make sure the actual desktop application is installed alongside the SciNote Edit client. 

Why does my file seem not to open the first time?

The first time you open a particular file type on a computer, your operating system briefly shows a small pop-up asking which program should open that file.

Note for Windows users: this pop-up can disappear quickly if you click elsewhere, which makes it easy to miss — and when that happens, the file appears not to open.

Watch for the pop-up and select the correct program (for example, Excel). Once you've made the choice for a given file type, every future file of that type opens straight away without asking again.

Do I need to do this on every computer?

Yes. These checks apply per machine. If your team works across several computers, confirm on each one that the browser permission is allowed, the desktop application is installed, and the first-time program choice has been made.
